Chairman and Non-Executive Director

Mr. Tariq Al Barwani  joined the Board in May 2016. He was elected as Chairman of the Board in January 2018.

Mr. Tariq Al Barwani is a director and shareholder of MB Holding Company LLC, Chief Executive Officer of Mawarid Mining LLC (“Mawarid”) and the Managing Director of MB Petroleum Services (“MBPS”) both of which are wholly-owned subsidiaries of MB Holding Company.

Mawarid was established to explore and develop mining opportunities in the Sultanate of Oman and has more recently made substantial investments in international exploration and development projects in Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Kazakhstan, Iran and Namibia. MBPS has become one of the largest oilfield services companies in the Middle East. The MB Petroleum group has a presence in more than 15 countries, with offices in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, South East Asia and Asia Pacific.

Mr. Barwani has a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Imperial College, UK and a Masters in Business Administration specialising in strategy and leadership from McGill University in Canada.

Non-Executive Director

Dr. Mohammed Al Barwani joined the Board in September 2012. Dr. Barwani is founder and Chairman of MB Holding group of companies (www.mbholdingco.com). He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Science from Miami University, USA and was awarded a Master’s Degree and PhD (Honorary) in Petroleum Engineering from Herriot- Watt University, UK.

MB Holding is the parent company of a number of companies with wide ranging interests in oil and gas, mining, marine and engineering services. MB Holding also has investments in financial services and in hospitality development. MB Group has operations in more than 20 countries, and employs more than 6,000 employees.

Dr. Barwani is a non-executive Director of a number of publicly traded and joint stock companies: Oman Air, Al Madina Insurance co. SAOG, Al Madina Investments SAOG (Muscat Stock Market), and UCL Resources. Dr. Barwani was formerly a non-executive director of National Bank of Oman, Shell Oman Marketing Company, Transgulf Holding and Taageer Leasing Company, Oman.

He is the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland to the Sultanate of Oman. He is also a member of the Sea-keepers International, a group dedicated to the protection of the Ocean’s eco-systems and its environment.

Dr. Barwani was awarded a life Time Achievement by the Al-Iktissad Wal-Aamal (2008), selected by Ernst & Young as a Global Entrepreneur representing Oman in 2012. He was conferred “COMMANDEUR” IN DE ORDE VAN ORANGE-NASSAU by Her Majesty the Queen of The Netherlands in January, 2012. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in March.

 
John McCoach

Interim CEO  and Independent Non-Executive Director

Mr. John McCoach was appointed interim CEO in August 2018 following the departure of Mr Mike Johnston. Mr McCoach originally joined the Board of Directors in October 2017 as an Independent Non-Executive Director. He  retired as president of the TSX Venture Exchange in 2017, a position he held since 2009. He is currently on the board of directors of the Capital Markets Authority Implementation Organization; the entity tasked by five participating provinces, one territory and the Government of Canada to create a pan-Canadian securities commission. He is a financial industry executive with experience in various strategic, management and operational roles. He has a track record of success in building strategies and programs to meet customer needs, maximize revenue growth, operational efficiency, and shareholder value. Mr. McCoach is also adept at leading and coaching teams through large, complex organizational and cultural transformations and regulatory changes. He is highly effective in establishing trust and credibility, both domestically and internationally, with multiple constituents.

Mr. McCoach has over 35 years’ experience in the investment industry. He has witnessed, and participated in, many changes in the Canadian capital markets. He was a senior vice president, corporate finance for an independent Canadian investment dealer prior to joining TMX Group.

 
 Jay Layman  

Jay Layman

Independent Non-Executive Director

Mr Layman joined the Board of Directors in March 2018. He is currently President, Director and Chief Operating Officer of Seabridge Gold, a TSX listed pre-development gold company. Mr. Layman has a broad range of technical expertise which makes him uniquely qualified for his role with Nautilus. Most recently, he was Vice President Solutions and Innovation for Newmont Mining Company where he was responsible for managing Global Technical Services and launching a Global Innovation Department. Functions reporting to him included Mining Engineering, Metallurgy and Process, Geostatistics and Reserves, Economic Geology, Project Engineering, Renewable Energy and Global Exploration Technology and Solutions. During his employment at Newmont, he was responsible for managing numerous Feasibility Studies and his career includes experience in Business Development, Operations, Finance and Supply Chain connectivity.

In his wide-ranging career, Mr. Layman has lived in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Indonesia and Australia and has additional work experience in Russia, Singapore, China and Peru. He has worked in both underground and open pit operations containing gold, copper, silver, lead and zinc metals. His education includes Bachelors Degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Finance from Washington State University and an MBA from Eastern Washington University.

 

 Jay Layman  

Jonathan Whitworth

Independent Non-Executive Director

Mr Whitworth joined the Board of Directors in March 2018. He commenced work with Seaspan in 2009 as Chief Executive Officer, bringing over 20 years of seagoing, management, strategic planning and leadership experience to the organization. In February 2017, he announced his retirement from Seaspan effective December 31, 2017. Seaspan is an association of Canadian companies primarily involved in coastal marine transportation, shipdocking/ship escort, ship repair and shipbuilding services in Western North America.

After graduating from the Texas Maritime Academy, Mr Whitworth sailed for six years as an officer aboard tankers and chemical carriers in the international market. He still holds an unlimited chief mate’s license and a 1600- ton captain’s license. He is one of a few shipowner and shipyard leaders in North America who has sailed at sea and commanded a vessel.

After completing his MBA at the University of North Texas, Mr Whitworth came ashore and held a number of management positions at ExxonMobil and Teekay Shipping. He later became CEO of Maritrans Inc., the largest publicly held tug/barge and tanker operator in the US Jones Act trade. Maritrans was sold to Overseas Shipholding Group of New York, in 2006, and he was retained as President to continue the strategic plan created at Maritrans.

Mr Whitworth is very involved in the marine and business community through board memberships with the BC Industry Training Authority, the Business Council of BC, and Texas A&M University at Galveston.
